As far as digital technology has come, there’s still one thing that digital cameras won’t do: give you perfect color every time. In fact, if they gave us perfect color 50% of the time, that would be incredible; but unfortunately, every digital camera (and every scanner that captures traditional photos) sneaks in some kind of color cast in your image. Generally, it’s a red cast, but depending on the camera, it could be blue. Either way, you can be pretty sure-there’s a cast.

In Photoshop CS there’s a new feature that takes a folder full of images, creates a slide show (complete with transitions), and compresses it into PDF format so you can e-mail it easily to a client for proofing. This is perfect for showing your portfolio to clients, sending clients proofs of wedding shots or portrait sittings, and any of a dozen other uses, none of which I can happen to think of right at this particular moment, but I’m sure later today, when I’m at the mall or driving to the office, they’ll come to me.

Sometimes photographers will find that the colors they saw with their eyes were not captured in their camera. Using the new Graduated Filter tool in Photoshop CS4, photographers can make isolated adjustments to an image using the tool’s gradients and correction sliders. The Graduated Filter can also apply an overall color overlay to specific areas of the image.

Before I start, just a quick disclaimer. This will help you achieve a comic book/graphic novel effect using photos and filters, but a true graphic novel takes a lot more work than that. With that disclaimer aside, if you've got the right set of photographs, or even if you take your own photographs specifically for this purpose, you could make a comic that's truly unique, original, and eye pleasing.

First up I'd like to ease your mind and let you know that you don't need to know how to draw to complete this tutorial. It's basically tracing, except that tracing is alot easier in Adobe Photoshop. Creating line art with this technique will take several hours to do a good job...if you want a tutorial that just applies a couple of filters, then this tutorial is not for you! You will need to know how to use the PEN TOOL for this tutorial. (If you don't know how to use the pen tool complete the fast tutorial found HERE first). I am currently using Photoshop 7. I suggest you read through the entire tutorial first, before you begin.

In this tutorial we will be using real life textures to assist in color rendering the Lady Blackhawk drawn by DC Comics artist Ed Benes. As you are digitally painting you may want to add details to give certain parts accentuated realism. I have found this brown leather texture sample that will be applied on to the color. We don’t necessarily need a black piece, just as long as we like the texture of the material. We can turn this black by first going to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate. This takes out the color while keeping the light and dark values of the leather.

Hey man, if somebody takes a picture of something and then you get Photoshop to draw the same thing right on top of it, only going outside the designated original art to make it looks somewhat comic book like, what do call that? I call it my latest tutorial! Use this baby to convert your digital pictures and scans into comic book style illustrations. Nothing can take the place of talent ...except for maybe a relative who works high up in the business...but this tutorial will get the idea across without requiring much artistic talent at all.

Ive been searching the net for some really nice tutorials on making a comic effect,read and studied, helpful for a start. but anyways, I'm not really satisfied so I just came up with the idea of making my own style... Don't think that this is spoon feed tutorial , this is merely just the same like those that came with the photoshop package and I've already encountered tutorials like this which is I think is very helpful for really really beginners. Digital Art Tutorial Recommended for Beginner to Intermediate Level Photoshop Users. The tutorial that follows shows MY way of colouring using Adobe Photoshop. I do not claim to be a Photoshop expert by any means, this is just the technique I use. It's a really good way of colouring/shading your pictures if you are indecisive about the colour palette, as you can easily change the colours at any stage! Please note this tutorial is written for PC users (because that's what I use) and for mouse users (because that's all I had at the time of writing this tutorial. Now I'm a very proud owner of a Wacom tablet and couldn't live without it).

One of the biggest changes from CS3 to CS4 is moving from adjustment layers to the new tone and color correction workflow. Once you get the hang of the features of the new adjustments panel, you will find it’s faster and more convenient than the old method.

Matt Kloskowski uses the new post crop vignetting abilities of Photoshop CS4’s Camera Raw to draw attention to the middle of the photograph. Earlier versions had the toll, but the new version can add vignetting after cropping and has added some new adjustment sliders.
