The idea behind this painting came to me 4-5 months back when I was looking at a broken hardware from my PC. It was always there in my mind, that how much similar they both were... the hardware's with their circuits and leaves with their veins. I always found them resembling in terms of shape, look, color and function, but totally contrasting at the same time as natural and manmade elements....It was then, looking at that piece of hardware that I thought of working on this concept. I was pretty clear about the thought behind it, but somehow I was not getting it correct on the canvas. I spent 6-10 days working on this image but that could not satisfy me. Finally I left the painting. But I was always having this concept rendering back in my mind.

Hecate is said to haunt a three-ways crossroad, each of her heads facing in a different direction. She is said to appear when the ebony moon shines. But I would like to create something a bit different to the real myth, in my mind, there must be a round moon behind her. As in history, she is said to haunt a three-way crossroads but to create something different I'm going to put three keys in her hand. Hecate is the Greek goddess, with Greek traditional clothes, so I will give her a long skirt. I don't know why all the girls in my paintings are heartbroken; maybe there is a crack in my own heart...

In this making of I will not describe all the passages that brought me from the sketch to the final image. There are many artists better than me that have already described that several times. What I will try to describe is primarily the process that brought me at the composition and colour palette choice. Not all my choices could be easily rationalized but some of these were and I will try to explain them. The project is clearly inspired by the TV series “Neo Genesis Evangelion”. I had a wish and a need to paint something related. I wasn’t interested in recreating a particular scene, already seen in an episode or in the movies, I wanted to create a concept that interpreted some of the symbolic elements that fascinated me. I thought a lot about what to paint even before I took a pencil in my hand or opened Photoshop. Without an interesting idea even the best painting remains just a technical exercise. I didn’t want to just draw; I also needed the piece to say something. I am fascinated by the idea that different people could read what I have painted in different ways. I took some decisions about the main elements to represent: the first was the Angel, the second a figure strictly connected to it, and finally the environment in which the action would have taken place. I have started to sketch on paper with a black pen to establish the bases of the composition. After dozens of sketches I started to work with Photoshop and my small Wacom Graphire Tablet. During the next phase I was interested in studying the composition and colour palette.

I did all of the work in Photoshop 7, as far as the face is concerned, Painter 8 was used in the last step for textures only.

Started with a rough pencil sketch that was pretty on-target for the rest of the piece. From there I refined the sketch by drawing new elements and importing them into Photoshop to tweak and adjust. I spent a while on this step because I like to have really solid line art from the beginning. By the time I had finished this early stage, I really wanted the composition to be solid and complete.

Deep under the surface of a long forgotten place.. the steps, the stoneplates of the floor are broken and the inscriptions on the signs are long gone and unreadable.. I had this idea about a fox-human hybrid creature.. a kind of ghost or supernatural being.. someone youcan meet in your dreams.. a guardian.. omniscient.. scary and sweet all at the same time.. red and orange and golden.. with shiny jadegreen eyes..

I read a book about marsh dwellers recently. It described their lives so well, that new ideas for illustrations appeared by themselves. With this picture I wanted to represent their life, the beauty of a women’s body and her feelings that she had, being unfortunately in love.

The idea to this painting came when I sat down with my notebook in my sofa one evening, and tried to come up with something that was both upclose and personal, yet touched on larger issues, such as affairs of state. Preferably involving only two people, because I find that can often be more intense. A royal assassination, I thought, and since I like Fantasy, it became an idea of two fairy sisters, one of them Queen, and a serious case of sibling jealousy. I added a sleeping husband in the background, to supply one more possible reason for jealousy. Later, I came up with a whole screenplay based on this and two of my other paintings featuring fairies.
